The Swiss city of Zug, which is known for its “Crypto Valley” and the attraction of many investors, traders and companies operating in the crypto space, is planning to launch a blockchain-powered trial municipal vote this summer.
The news comes from the local media outlet Swissinfo.ch – and the event is scheduled to take place between June 25 and July 1 this year. This will be Switzerland’s first municipal vote using blockchain technology.
As the report says, this voting system will implement the city’s digital ID (eID) system that was launched in November last year – and will allow citizens to vote via their mobile devices. Aside from voting this way, citizens will be asked if a blockchain-based eID system like that one should be used for referendum votes in the future.
After establishing the famous “Crypto Valley”, Zug has become one of the leading ecosystems for crypto, blockchain and distributed ledger technologies. In 2016, the city launched an initiative that accepted Bitcoin (BTC) as a payment for some municipality services.
Switzerland’s tax-free policy for crypto investors makes it the number one most blockchain-friendly country in Europe. On June 6 this year, the privately held bank Hypothekarbank Lenzburh became the first bank in Switzerland to provide business accounts for blockchain and cryptocurrency companies.
