LinkedIn crypto scammers started impersonating the CEO of Tron and Ledger and they continued using malicious tactics to steal people’s crypto and identity. In today’s TRON news, we take a closer look at the scam and what it means for the altcoin.
The LinkedIn crypto scammers use video recordings on a loop during live calls as celebrities remain the main targets of choice for these malicious actors. The scammers stepped up their game by manipulating the videos to impersonate people. In a medium post posted by Kyle Pierce, the co-founder of the blockchain startup uPlexa, explained how he was contacted by William Chang, the director of operations at Ledger Capital, on LinkedIn.
The alleged Chang, claimed that he was looking for projects to invest in an offered Pierce a Skype call so Pierce decided to see this offer though. After a few weeks of schedule inconsistencies, the pair set the date. Pierce wrote:
“He introduced himself and explained how his firm was working with the TRON Foundation on a new secret project that provides incentives for partnerships with other cryptocurrency projects doing ‘unique things’ within the blockchain industry.’’
Pierce noticed that something was off during the call as the video and audio were desynchronized and William Chang continued to talk visually even if he was silent. His mouth reportedly kept moving while he wasn’t talking:
“I watched real hard and noticed the video was on some type of loop or had been edited. In fact, his mouth was moving the entire clip even though we had a back and forth conversation with pauses, and with me also speaking throughout the call.”
After the strange call, he received an email that was allegedly sent from the TRON Foundation domain. But of course it wasn’t, the scammers used a fake IP address from a popular service provider to various shady actors including email spoofing. The next step of the scheme involved a Skype call with TRON’s CEO, Justin Sun. Justin Sun, of course, turned out to be a pre-recorded video of Tron’s CEO so someone else talked to Pierce:
“I gave “Justin” a test to see just how horrible of a person he truly is. I asked him if I will have access to the funds within 7 months or so as I will require a critical heart surgery.’’
While it is still unclear what the ultimate goal here was, luckily Pierce noticed that something was off, but it is clear that these people are prepared to go to great lights to achieve these frauds.
