Ransomware Attackers Will Hit The English Football League: NCSC Report

In the NCSC 28-page report titled (The Cyber Threat to Sports Organizations), ransomware attackers will not aim for the English Football league. The security center is a UK government institution that provides support and advice for public and private sector entities on how to avoid security threats. The institution is based in London and started operating in 2016. According to the NCSC reports, the English Football League team became the latest victim of a cyber-attack as the hackers encrypted the corporate and security systems and demanded a ransom of 400 bitcoin that is worth about $.8 million in order to release the decryption key.

Since the club owners refused to pay the amount, the hackers took revenge and encrypted the club’s end-user devices. It’s not clear what kind of attack the vectors used but the NCSC said that the initial infection was a result of a phishing email that got access to the club’s CCTV system and installed malware on the system. Since all of the systems at the stadium were connected, the infection of the attack spread incredibly fast. It is estimated that the club lost a few hundred thousand British pounds. Most servers were affected and the left the club unable to use the corporate emails.

The NCSC director of operations Paul Chichester stated that the football clubs could not view cybercrimes as a significant threat but it remains a serious issue for the broader cybersecurity goals in the United Kingdom. The football clubs are one target and therefore have to take the issue seriously. The report further mentioned that the hackers attacked a prominent Premier League because the hackers used a fake email to steal more than one million pounds before someone at the club detected suspicious transactions.

Hackers are casting a huge net in hopes of infecting a lot of individual machines as possible as over 70% of UK sports organizations experienced cybersecurity breaches this year. Sports organizations are some of the biggest institutions that are financially profitable and are becoming valuable targets for ransomware attacks as the attacks usually begin with an innocent email.
