US DOJ Claims Nicolas Maduro Used Crypto In Drug Scheme

The US DOJ (U. S Department of Justice) threw some indictments at Maduro, alleging that he was using crypto in a vast drug scheme in order to hide his financial activities. Let’s find out more about the upcoming cryptocurrency news.

People are still using crypto for good and bad things and the Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro is now supposed of using crypto for the latter category. He proposed Petro a few years ago and obliged the entire country to use it. Petro was supposed to be backed by oil but it only showed his corrupt regime. Ever since the president leaned harder on his Petro project and tried to mitigate the isolated position of his administration. However, the more Maduro turned for crypto in order to liberate the country, America’s leadership was getting even more focused on stifling him.

Today, the US DOJ accused Maduro and a lot of his colleagues that they have been overseeing a vast narco-terrorism scheme, and used crypto to hide their financial tracks. The DOJ announced plenty of charges against Maduro and 14 of his ministers about overseeing a 20-year old drug trafficking ring that was supposed to end in the United States in huge amounts of cocaine. The indictments range from counts of corruption, narco-terrorism which will end up in an investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration and other US Government bodies, including Homeland Securit Investigations unit.

According to the US DOJ, Maduro used Colombian FARC revolutionaries to help him with cocaine trafficking and chose to conduct the business in crypto especially in Petro, Ethereum or Bitcoin.

The new indictments show that the law enforcement investigators of America can pursue these complex transnational schemes according to the Executive Associate Director Alysa D Erichs:

 “Today’s announcement highlights HSI’s global reach and commitment to aggressively identify, target and investigate individuals who violate U.S. laws, exploit financial systems, and hide behind cryptocurrency to further their illicit criminal activity. Let this indictment be a reminder that no one is above the law – not even powerful political officials.”

The Petro cryptocurrency, on the other hand, has been swamped by a lack of information since the launch in 2018. After the launch, Maduro said that the asset will be backed by 5 million barrels worth of oil which have not been retrieved from Venezuela’s domestic crude reserves. The barrels never showed up but Maduro commented:

 “I will deliver these 30 million of barrels as a liquid, physical, material backing for the petro … The inventories of crude and products in storage tanks are available for immediate commercialization … to sustain and back the operations of the sovereign Venezuelan crypto-asset, the petro.”
