The musician and artist M.I.A announces an NFT art series and said that it is the only place that is appropriate for her work to finally exist so let’s read more in our latest crypto news today.
The artist M.I.A announced an NFT art series with the first drop coming this Thursday on Foundation. The piece is called “GIFTY 1” and is a part of a collection called NFT Garage Dance while also planning a new follow-up called “Kala COYN.” The non-fungible tokens are specialized units of cryptocurrency that can be attached to files and sold online on specialized marketplaces.
The market for these digital collectibles exploded in the past few months and musicians like Kings of Leon, Grimes, Rico Nasty, Yaeji, and more all released collections of visual art and music as NFTs. Aphex Twin released an NFT as well on Foundation which sold for $136,000. Grimes’ collection sold for about $6 million and Kings of Lean for over $2 million. Bigger profits were made by Beeple who sold an image file worth $69 million.
M.I.A hasn’t released a new album since 2016 but was involved in producing a 2018 documentary called Matangi/Maya/M.I.An about her music and art. “Kala COYN” is a reference to the 2007 album which was named after her mother, as she said in a statement:
“KALA COYN and the GARAGE DANCE series is a living, breathing, psycho-spectral canvas that crystalizes this moment in time for me. Visually, it’s a mind f*ck and embodies everything I’ve loved about the digital art arena. It’s only now that the appropriate gallery for my work finally exists.”
As recently reported, Saturday Night Live had a skit with a funny shot of a building on an American campus and then a classroom where the US Secretary of Treasury Janet Yellen finished addressing a classroom where bored students “paid attention” and then waited for some questions. A hand was raised and it was a student dressed as the sidekick of Batman-Robin. However, moments later a beat drops and it sounds like Eminem’s Without Me. “Robin” rapped about NFTs, mentioning Gronkowski’s $1.6 million dollar sale of the digital trading cards that were minted by Tampa Bay Buccaneers but then at one point another person looking like Morpheus jumps in and starts describing some of the most unbelievable NFTs.
