A Christiano Ronaldo NFT has just sold for over $290K and the digital sports card is a part of Sorare’s crypto fantasy soccer game. Let’s find out more in our latest crypto news today.
The Christiano Ronaldo NFT beat NBA Top Shot’s single sale record of Lebron James. The NBA Top Shot dominated the craze around the crypto sports NFTs but ETH-based fantasy soccer game Sorare is coming right after it. For now, it topped Top Shot with the highest sale of single sports NFTs according to the announcement that one NFT card of Ronaldo was sold for $289,920 on the platform.

It is also the most expensive soccer-card ever sold thus marking a new record that was set by the sale of physical Topps card of Erling Haaland for $124,230. It beat the NBA Top Shot NFT as mentioned. Sorare user Camembert that has a collection including other high-value cards like Raphael Varane and Vinicius Junior commented:
“Ninety-nine percent of people probably think it is stupid to spend so much on something that you cannot ‘touch.’ My parents don’t get it and think I am a bit crazy. I would personally never buy a Picasso, but I was very happy to invest 300,000 USD in my idol.”
Camembert claims that he has no plans to try and flip the card for a higher value as the NFT boom goes on:
“This purchase was not motivated by speculation, I do not plan to sell anytime soon. For me, Cristiano is priceless.”
The Ronaldo NFT could have enjoyed a short window as the highest value sports NFT ever sold but then it was overcome by Gronk. NFL Star Rob Gronkowski’s NFT ended on Sunday with a $1.6 million worth of total NFT cards like the “Career Highlight Refractor Card” which sold for 232 ETH. That’s still far away from the highest-ever football card sale of Patrick Mahomes, the physical rookie card sold for $861,000 earlier this year.
The rising value of NFT sports collectibles came amidst an explosion of trading volume of these collectibles including artwork and other items. DappRadar shows that the trading volume skyrocketed in Late February when the NBA Top Shot started gaining attention. Sorare also saw some growth over the course of last year as the platform surpassed more than 120 total team licenses to date like Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain and more.
