Crypto ransomware gang threatened to release all of the ‘dirty laundry’ of the USA president Donald Trump after they stole more than 1TB of legal secrets from celebrities over the past week as we are reading in the latest crypto news.
The crypto ransomware gang stole the data from some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry and is now demanding $42 million in crypto or they will expose the US President Donald Trump and his dirty secrets. The gang released a 2GB piece of some legal documents marked ‘’Lady Gaga’’ and fired the link media outlets which broke the internet about the attack last week on the New York law company Grubman Shire Meiselas and Sacks.
The law firm has clients including Robert DeNiro, Madonna, and Elton John. The crypto-ransomware gang hacked the company’s encrypted server and stole 756 GB of data on confidential contracts, email addresses, telephone numbers, personal correspondence, and non-disclosure agreements while the company has refused to pay up still. The ReVil ransomware group or known as Sodinkibi posted a new message that said they are doubling their ransom and will use dirt on Trump as leverage:
“The next person we’ll be publishing is Donald Trump. There’s an election going on, and we found a ton of dirty laundry on time.”
The ransomware gang addressed Trump directly and recommended he ‘’poke a sharp stick at the guys’’ within a week if he wanted to remain president and said to the people that if they let out the documents, they wouldn’t want him as a president. The attackers warned they will release the stolen data in nine stages unless their demands are met. The ransomware gang prefers to be paid in Monero but they will accept Bitcoin for a higher fee. It is still unclear what link does Trump have with the law office since he has never been a client.
According to the New York Post, Grubman refused to negotiate with the hackers despite their threats of destroying the law firm if they don’t see the money. He believes that the hackers will release the documents even if they don’t get their money so the FBI considers the hack an act of terrorism so the US doesn’t negotiate with terrorists. Brett Callow from the Emsisoft information security firm commented:
“Companies in this situation have no good options available… Even if they pay the ransom demand, there is no guarantee the criminals will destroy the stolen data if it has a high market value. The data may still be sold or traded… In these cases, it’s possible that the criminals will attempt to extort money directly from the people whose information was exposed.”
