As 2021 came to a close, Reddit shared that cryptocurrency was the most seen topic this year and beat out gaming, sports, and weddings. The word “crypto” was used over 6.6 million times across the site. The biggest surprise is that Redditors were most interested in DOGE than BTC. As 2021 comes to an end, Reddit shared that Crypto was no.1 topic and the five most-viewed crypto subreddits were dogecoin, superstonk, cryptocurrency, bitcoin, and AMC stocks. The move-upvoted crypto posts on Reddit were about Tesla, DOGE, and bitcoin but also crypto’s survivorship bias.
Out of the 500 different crypto-related subreddits, supertonk saw the most growth this year and increased its membership by 917% to 713,000 users since 2020. With the subreddit often discussing the traditional stock market it became a place for members to discuss topics such as GameStop’s upcoming NFT marketplace, anti-crypto Citadel CEO Ken Griffin, and China banning crypto. The financial subreddit wallstreetbets also reversed course on the anti-crypto stance allowing the 11.4 million members to discuss BTC, ETH, and DOGE earlier this year. Redditor’s interest in crypto is longstanding but this year was a year for the record. As crypto and NFT are going mainstream, crypto enthusiasts and newcomers alike took to the platform to educate themselves and get into the conversation.
