DC Comics launched a new Batman NFT collection as one of the oldest American Comic book companies, but it did warn the creators not to make their own version of it. In our latest cryptocurrency news, we are reading more about it.
A recent partnership between Veve and DC Comics is opening a new phase in the comic book studio’s merch strategy as the company announced a collection of digital Batman statues with a black and white color scheme. The collection has 4 different designs and each design has a limited number of copies so the value will vary depending on their rarity. The most expensive token is a digital state of Nightwing which will cost $89.99 and has $1850 copies.
As DC Comics launched the Batman NFT collection, its tokens would generate under $1 million in revenue and on the secondary market, each token’s value will increase a lot especially with the current hype around NFTs. The world of collectibles is now capturing the attention of bigger companies and it proves already that it is a great business model adopted by a few UEFA clubs with its digital cards developed by Sorare. NBA’s Top Shot program also auctioned its most expensive NFT in history for $69.3 million.
No wonder that DC Comics wants a piece of the pie considering that it has exclusive merchandising rights to Batman which is the most profitable superhero up to this day and on which some NFTs have already been sold with no money going to the DC comic’s wallets. It seems that DC comics is getting out on the market and a leaked memo shows that the company warned its creative team that it owns exclusive rights for all characters published under the franchise and that it’s in no mood to allow anyone else to launch similar ones without their consent:
“DC is exploring opportunities to enter the market for the distribution and sale of original DC digital art with NFTs, including both new arts created specifically for the NFT market, as well as original digital art rendered for DC’s comic book publications.
As DC examines the complexities of the NFT marketplace, and we work on a reasonable and fair solution for all parties involved, including fans and collectors, please note that the offering for sale of any digital images featuring DC’s intellectual property with or without NFTs, whether rendered for DC’s publications or rendered outside the scope of one’s contractual engagement with DC, is not permitted.”
