A new OpenSea update left creators unable to mint new NFTs which ended up in quite the frustration for the creators in the space as we can see more today in our latest crypto news.
The NFT marketplace OpenSea limited the number of NFTs that each creator can mint using the smart contract of the platform. The NFT creators spoke out about this decision which doesn’t only limit new collections that use the contract but also existing ones on the platform. Right after the backlash they recieved from the community, OpenSea announced that it has reversed the decision o limit collections minted with its smart contracts and it attributed the decision to the “misuse” of the feature including minting plagiarized artwork and fake collections.
To address feedback we've received about our creator tools, we updated our collection storefront contract limits to only support the creation of up to 5 collections and 50 items per collection.

The new OpenSea update left creators frustrated while the platform still surging in trading volume and enjoying a record-breaking month. The Ethereum NFT marketplace did upset a lot of creators by limiting how many NFTs can be minted using the internal collection storefront contract. The Twitter account of OpenSea said they have updated the collection storefront contract limits to allow five collections per NFT wallet or user and 50 items max or NFT collectibles in each collection.
OpenSea’s Twitter account posted:
“We know this change may impact our community so please don’t hesitate to share how this affects your creative flow.”
The NFT community replied in force in the hours after the tweet with many of the creators and crypto industry personalities criticizing the marketplace for inhibiting the collections which use OpenSea’s NFT smart contract. The change to the contract limits onboarding new creators and it Is seemingly an unnecessary update from the community’s point of view according to Twin Flames creator Justin Aversano.

The creators are still able to choose to use their own external NFT smart contract and avoid these limits like Manifold which is an Andreesen-backed smart contract startup that works with Steve Aoki and allows people to deploy their own customizable NFT minting contracts so that creators can also mint via a competing NFT marketplace like Rarible. As some creators noted, however, the change also impacts the existing collections which used the OpenSae NFT contract. For those creators that have minted 50 or more NFTs in the collection, they are unable to continue adding to the collection and they are limited to five total collections.
