Launched in 2019, the Giga Initiative is a global project by UNICEF and the UN’s International Telecommunication Union to connect the school to the internet so that all children can benefit from web-based information and opportunities. The Patchwork Kingdom collection is created in partnership with SnowCrash Labs marketplace, Metagod, and Ethereum Foundation which contains 1000 NFTs. UNICEF said that In order to convey Giga’s importance each NFT is painted using data as an initiative collected from 282,000 schools in 21 countries.
Bremer’s art plays into it and it is inspired by the work of “It’s a Small World” creator Mary Blair and it was created with the idea of using simple geometric shapes, circles, squares, and triangles to build sets and cities. She said:
“In the final visuals, each school has become a tiny square, interlocking with other schools to form Kingdoms, split between those connected and disconnected to the internet.”
In case you are looking at it as a cash grab from the UN agency, which asked children to “trick and treat for Unicef” during Halloween, it is not true. UNICEF has been involved in blockchain technology before the 2019 launch of the CryptoFund which allows the organization to hold, receive and distribute cryptocurrency. This is attracted attention and contributions and in 2021 in April for instance, Huobi Charity Limited is an NGO tied to Huobi Global and it donated $1 million in BTC as well as fiat to UNICEF and another 7 BTC to CryptoFund. What’s more to it, UNICEF Innovation Fund was investing in blockchain longer and open-source Web3 projects with the goal to impact all children across the world.
