One local store owner in Winnipeg reported that there is an alleged Bitcoin scam in Canada which left several of his customers victims of hackers. Reportedly targeting residents of this city, the grocery store owner warned that many of his customers were victims of the scammers.
Official reports from Global News show that Husni Zeid placed a large sign on the Bitcoin machine that he has in-store, urging people to exercise maximum caution with regard to phone scams asking for fake Bitcoin investments. As he told the local media outlets:
“A lot of people are getting phone calls saying that they have to transfer the money to Bitcoin regarding CRA; we’ve had Manitoba Hydro as well.”
This is nothing new in the Bitcoin scam news. However, the grocery store owner stressed that the scams have happened repeatedly many times per week – which is why he states that the store receives complaints from victims all of the time.
According to an employee of the grocery store, one woman was profoundly affected by the Bitcoin scam in Canada. She explained:
“Yesterday (a) mom was in here and she said she gave all her savings to them and she was just crying. It was heartbreaking that she fell for it; it was sad, and all she kept saying was ‘I have kids.’ (It) was awful.”
The employee in the store also said that when someone is buying Bitcoin at their machine while on their phone, they usually warn people that a scam may be underway. Reports from Winnipeg share similarities with another scam which was reported on June 19. In this instance, the crypto news showed that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) allege that fraudsters impersonated some local authorities in order to extort BTC from their victims.
All of these are signs that while the adoption of Bitcoin and blockchain is booming, there are still many things which are overlooked. The Bitcoin scam in Canada proves that there are many regions which are still prone to cyber criminals and people manipulating their way into owning cryptocurrency.
Hopefully, we will see certain regulations put in place to prevent these kind of scams in the future.
