The US DOJ goes to court after announcing a civil forfeiture complaint to retrieve over $150 million of embezzled funds in BTC and it tracked down the funds during the robbery investigation which involved Sony. The department stated:
“The United States took action in a federal court today to protect and ultimately return more than $154 million in funds that were allegedly stolen from a subsidiary of Tokyo-based Sony Group Corporation and then seized by law enforcement during the FBI’s investigation of the theft.”
An employee of Sony embezzled these funds in May 2021 and converted them to more than 3800 BTC which are now worth over $180 million. The funds were seized on December 1st, 2021 based on the FBI investigation. The Sony employee named Rei Ishii was working at Sony Life Insurance Company LTD which is a subisidary of the company. According to the Justice Department, Ishii diverted the $154 million when the company tried to transfer the funds between their own financail accounts. The US DOJ claims that Ishii falsified transactions, which caused the funds to be diverted from the company account to one that he controlled at a bank in California.
Ishii allegedly converted the funds to BTC so now the civil forfeiture complaint was filed in California to protect Sony’s funds. The FBI investigation gained huge assistance from other law enforcement entities including the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, National Police Agency of Japan, Japan Prosecutors Unit of Emerging Crimes. Both Citibank and Sony aided the investigation and they cooperated with Law enforcement as soon as the theft was detected according to FBI Special Agent In Charge Suzanne Turner. The Acting US Attorney Randy Grossman noted:
“It is our intent to return the stolen money to the victim of this audacious theft, and today’s action helps us do that. You cannot rely on cryptocurrency to hide your ill-gotten gains from law enforcement. The United States coordinates extensively with its international partners to forestall crime and retrieve stolen funds.”
