Australian open teams up with Decentraland in order to join the Metaverse and hold this year’s tournament virtually as well so let’s read more in today’s blockchain news.
One of the biggest tennis tournaments in the world, the Australian Open teams up with Decentraland to enter both the NFT and the Metaverse side of the crypto industry. This year’s championship will be held in Decentraland as well which is a virtual reality platform and at the same time, the fans can take part further by buying non-fungible tokens listed to live match data.
With the Omicron cases in Australia skyrocketing, the organizers of the Australian Open decided to grant bigger access to both the international spectators and locals that are concerned to attend matches in person. The tournament will also take place in Decentraland and the visitors can see the main stadium Rod Laver Arena and explore all the restaurants and watch the tennis matches. The AO Tournament Director Craig Tiley noted:
“With this next wave of technology, global tennis fans will have the opportunity to be part of the 2022 Australian Open in a way never before available.”
The organization will release a collection of 6776 non-fungible tokens dubbed “Art Ball NFTs” so each collectible will correspond to a winning shot from the matches of the 2022 championship. The owners will receive an airdrop with the footage of the point as well and virtual wearables and other benefits in the future. If one of the 11 championship points land on the plot, the holder of the NFT can claim and get the physical tennis ball from the match that was used in the game. The NFTs will be tracked by the same technology that is employed to judge the matches in the game points.
The “Art Ball NFTs” will go on sale tomorrow, January 10 while the AO Decentraland event goes live a week later which is the same day when the physical tournament starts. The Korean electronics giant Samsung as we recently reported, also introduced a new metaverse experience which is empowered by no other than Decentaland and will enable the clients to virtually attend the live music events. Samsung explained:
“Best of all, you can earn NFT badges and exclusive, limited-supply collections of Samsung Decentraland wearables to customize your avatars.”
The novelty will be open in Decentraland for a limited period and in the ongoing year, the Korean company plans to bring the experience to more people by launching a multiverse approach on the platform. Michelle Crossan-Matos concluded:
“Metaverse empowers us to transcend physical and spatial limits to create unique virtual experiences that could not happen otherwise. Innovation is in our DNA, and we can’t wait for you all to experience this burgeoning virtual world.”
