The US Pharmacy chain CVS files for trademark of its products in the metaverse according to the filing with the US patent trade office. According to the filing, CVS is pursuing a patent that can be downloadable for virtual goods, consumer products, health, wellness, beauty, and personal care for use online and in online virtual worlds. The application also cited “downloadable virtual goods” and NFTs that contain artwork authenticated by the NFTs.
The patent indicates that CVS could start providing typical services of traditional pharmacy too like non-emergency medical advice, counseling, nutrition guidance, personal wellness, and more in virtual reality and augmented reality environments. CVS filed for the application at the end of February but it is still unclear whether CVS will roll out the offerings on a metaverse platform or if it will build a proprietary version.

In October 2021, Nike submitted four filing requests to trademark virtual goods, and the filings listed a variety of virtual goods that include eyewear, bags, headwear, and sports equipment. Back in 2019, Nike was granted a patent for cryptographically secured digital assets and by 2021, Nike acquire RTFKT Studios that focused on sneaker-themed NFTs alone. Nike president CEO John Donahoe noted:
“We’re acquiring a very talented team of creators with an authentic and connected brand. Our plan is to invest in the RTFKT brand, serve and grow their innovative and creative community and extend Nike’s digital footprint capabilities.”
Other brands following the metaverse path include L’Oreal which applied for trademarks as well and Ralph Lauren which also filed a trademark for the use of the name as a virtual store and for selling virtual goods. Disney, Skechers, and McDonald’s all filed for metaverse-based trademarks.
