Parity ETH Nodes Victims Of New Attack After Losing Sync With Network

Parity ETH nodes were a victim of a new attack after the nodes lost all sync with the network as we are about to read in the ethereum news below.

The ethereum network was a target of a coordinated attack according to analysts and the reports show that some Parity ETH nodes lost sync with the network today as the blockchain infrastructure company Parity Technology said it believed there was an ongoing attack and released network upgrades to protect the network instantly.

According to the crypto security consultant Sergio Demian Lerner, the attack was implemented in a very simple way where you can send to a parity node a block with invalid transactions but the valid header and the node will mark the block header as invalid and will ban the header forever. The software developer Liam Aharon analyzed the attack and concluded that it was very close to taking down the network and that Ethereum could even become much more vulnerable to similar attacks in 2020.

According to Aharon, the attack didn’t bring down the entire network because it has a Geth client which is immune to the attack.

However, if you take Parity’s intention to transition to Parity Ethereum in a DAO ownership and maintainer model, Geth will become the only maintained client in 2020. Aharon further explained:

 “If this scenario came true, attacks similar to today’s would devastate the network, instead of just being inconvenient.’’

During the past year, Parity released a lot of updates that were meant to fix the node vulnerability. Back in March, the Parity CEO Jutta Steiner said that the new controversial Create2 Ethereum function will prevent the multisig freeze after an incident happened when a user ‘’accidentally killed’’ the parity multi-sig library by launching a vulnerability to become the owner of the library and then destroy it.

Another global hacking research collective SRLabs confirmed that there are only two-third of the Ethereum client software that uses the Ethereum nodes which have been patched against the critical security flaw discovered earlier this year.

The data shows that the unpatched Parity nodes have 15 percent of all of the scanned nodes showing that 15 percent of all ETH nodes are vulnerable to 51% attack.
