The president of El Salvador Nayib Bukele cancels his appearance at the Miami BTC conference and explained that in his country there are some unforeseen circumstances that require his presence. The ongoing Miami BTC conference won’t see the presence of the biggest proponents of the leading asset Nayib Bukele. He said that he made the hard decision of canceling his participation in the event because of unforeseen circumstances that are happening in his country.

The crime levels in the Latin American country have surged drastically in the recent weeks and the police reported a total of 62 homicides and making it the most violent day in the country’s 30 years on top of that, the officials registered 1140 murders in 2021 with an average of 18 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. The nations like Singapore and Japan reported 0.3 killings per 100,000 people.

To solve this issue, El Salvador’s authorities declared a state of emergency followed by the arrest of 5000 people that were detained without a warrant and Bukele threatened to stop providing food for imprisoned gang members in the killings spree didn’t stop:

“There are rumors that they (gangs) want to start taking revenge on random, honest people. If they do that, there won’t even be one meal in prisons. I swear to God they won’t eat a grain of rice and let’s see how long they last.”

El Salvador also gained global popularity last year when it became the first country and adopt BTC as a legal tender. In any case, the move affected the local tourism industry that increased by 30% since.

El Salvador’s Minister of Tourism Morena Valdez added that the American tourists are most attracted by the destination and before the adoption of BTC, the travelers are coming from neighboring nations like Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. However, it is yet to be seen how the recent events will reflect on the advancing tourism sector.
