The Reddit community is one of the most active digital communities in the world. Recently, the company has been working on scaling its recently added Ethereum (ETH) cryptocurrency rewards system and has asked its own community to lend them a hand. After the website started using ETH in May 2020, the Reddit community is now asking for a unique scaling solution proposed by the network.
Both “Ethereum” and “scaling” are words that are often paired together in the crypto news. However, as the network moves towards its second iteration which is named Ethereum 2.0 (known as Serenity), there are suggestions that any social media which can use the blockchain network needs to do some scaling of its own.
Anyways, the Reddit community asks ETH for a scaling solution in a page which is called the “Great Reddit Scalling Bake-Off,” where Reddit has called on some 466,000 members of the r/ethereum subreddit. This is done in order to help with the conundrum by sending in their own demos until July 31st this year, or providing their feedback on each other’s demos.
“Some fame will be earned,” said Reddit, but there won’t be any prizes offered. Instead, the aim of the Reddit community is to find a scaling solution which will allow it to bring the token reward to the mainnet.
“Our goal is to find a solution that will support hundreds of thousands of Community Points users on mainnet today, and can eventually scale to all of Reddit (430 million monthly users),” Reddit wrote.
As you may know if you have been following our ETH news before, the Reddit community launched its Community Points program which is build on the Ethereum blockchain in May 2020. This program was designed to meet the needs of members of communities such as FortNiteBR (popular virtual game) and CryptoCurrency subreddits. In these communities, their point rewards are called “Bricks” and “Moons,” respectively.
In total, the two groups have around 2.3 million subscribers which is still a tiny fraction of the reported 430 million users that the entire Reddit community counts. Therefore, Reddit is searching for a way to expand the program outside these two groups.
“Please note that all demos need to simulate Community Points usage for 100,000 users,” the company added.
In the blog post, we can also see that Reddit already looked into some promising scaling solutions and most of them “focus on the exchange use case, which favors optimizing for transfers.”
