Many businesses and individuals in Agnes Water are supporting this initiative, including accommodation providers, tour operators, restaurants and even the local pub. They are accepting cryptocurrencies, despite being a town with 2,000 permanent residents.
There is even a billboard that reads ‘Welcome to Agnes Water-1770, Australia’s First Digital Currency Town’, welcoming the visitors to drive in and spend their cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, NEM, Litecoin, and Ethereum.
The beach town launched this initiative inspired from the real estate agent Gordon Christian, who saw the potential for cryptocurrencies after a client of his explored how to go about processing a Bitcoin payment from a customer. His idea soon was soon enough adopted and piqued when he learned that the Brisbane International Airport had begun accepting cryptocurrencies too.
Selling this idea wasn’t hard at all. As Christian told ABC News:
We started from the ground up, shared it with a couple of businesses and they were straight on board … I guess they were international travelers themselves and had heard of these types of payments. Initially, we had a good 10 businesses that just said, ‘Fine — let’s go for it’.”
Many local tourism operators are also supportive of this idea. There are even 31 local businesses that are embracing this initiative and are accepting cryptocurrency payments through POS (point-of-sale) terminals developed by TravelbyBit which is a Queensland-based crypto payments startup.
