According to recent data from Google, the term ‘bitcoin’ is among the top searched items in 2017. The ‘Year in Search 2017’ as an overview of what was trending in 2017 stated that Bitcoin ranked second in ‘Global News’ category which is a distinction that indicates the search volume of popular terms.
According to the category, the term has even outranked some of the year most talked-about news such as the Las Vegas shooting and this year’s Solar Eclipse.
In addition to this, searches for “how to buy bitcoin” have also been at the peak of the lists in the “how to” search category. According to the reports, Bitcoin has been among the top searched terms this year and confirms how strong the attention on bitcoin and cryptocurrencies in 2017 was during the historic run-up in market prices.
As a reminder, Bitcoin’s price grew by 20x over the course of this year, making it rise from roughly $900 in January to an all-time high of $19,783 in December this year. The cryptocurrency market cap also topped $650 billion, up from $17 billion at the start of this year.
What’s interesting is that a lot of these searches come from outside the US. In the US country breakdown, Google data showed that bitcoin-related terms ranked lower than they did on the global rate.
If you search for ‘bitcoin’ at Google Trends, you will see the countries that are most contributing to the current volume that include South Africa, Slovenia, Netherlands, Nigeria and Austria, while US ranks 16th on the list.
