The mobile and desktop Opera browser is expanding the cryptocurrency purchases to US users as the Norwegian company looks to continue building its Web 3.0 credentials. In a partnership with Wyre which is a US-licensed money transmitter in the crypto sector, the Opera browser authorizes US based customers to buy Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) directly from the crypto wallet of the browser.
Similarly, Android users can use debit cards while Apple iOS device users can purchase crypto using Apple Pay. This big announcement in the cryptonews is what Opera has been preparing for over the past few months. The purchasing via mobile browsers (Opera for Android and Opera Touch in the Apple App Store) has been open to residents of Sweden, Denmark and Norway for more than a year, and a spokesperson from the company said that they intend to roll out seamless crypto top-ups in other countries as well.
As Opera browser authorizes mobile payments and debit card purchases, we can see that it is aiming for a bigger market share in the region. The browser is still relatively small in this aspect, with a 0.48% market share in US according to Statcounter, and a 2.12% market share in Europe. Currently, data reveals that Opera serves 320 million people with browser and AI content delivery solutions.
In addition to this, the Opera browser authorizes the Apple Pay solution and says that it allows users to go “from zero to crypto in less than 30 seconds.” As the official announcement by the head of crypto at Opera Charles Hamel in the Bitcoin news reads:
“In the past, obtaining cryptocurrencies was a cumbersome process that took hours or even days. When you compare it with this seamless solution, which takes less than 30 seconds, it really is a game changer.”
Opera is listed on NASDAQ and publicly explains that it intends to continue seeking various ways to eliminate barriers to crypto adoption and differentiate its offering from runaway market leaders Chrome, Safari and Firefox through the addition of Web 3.0 features such as crypto wallet, DApp explorer and other security/privacy tools.
Opera is also a direct competitor to the Brave browser, which launched a few years ago and managed to pass 10 million monthly active users in December last year.
