According to the latest crypto news, Delaware helped the U.K authorities to capture the British hacker Grant West that last year managed to steal more than $700,000 worth of Bitcoin.
Delawareonline provided a report where it shows that undercover U.K officials captured West while he was traveling by train and was instantly convicted of fraud. This is the first time UK authorities arrest a cybercriminal.
U.S Secret Service of Delaware played a huge part in capturing West by helping the British police uncover some of the stolen capital and finding an account with more than $200,000,000 worth of Bitcoin.
According to Delawareonline:
“Delaware for years has been the site of large numbers of government seizures of dollars from the bank accounts of suspected criminals because so many banks keep their central servers in the First State. Now, that has expanded to include bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.’’
West managed to hack websites of companies such as Uber, Sainsbury’s and Ladbrokes after gaining access into the companies’ websites and obtaining personal information of the customers. He managed to steal private data of all the clients via phishing emails and then sell the information online.
West covered his tracks by storing his stolen funds in Bitcoin and spreading them into multiple wallets. He had stolen information from 160,000 different people.
He is now given 10 years and eight months in jail, and the judge even described West as a ‘’one man cyber crime wave’’.
