Baseline Protocol Uses ETH Mainnet To Integrate Google Spreadsheets

The Baseline Protocol released new integrations for Google Sheets and Microsoft 365 allowing multiple parties to verify their database share the same record, all with the help of the Ethereum mainnet. Let’s find out more in the upcoming Ethereum news.

The Baseline protocol has a new function that allows for the maintenance of verifiably consistent records by suing a spreadsheet along with the enterprise resource planning solution. The platform published a proof-of-concept on June 7 that demonstrated the ‘’baselining’’ of the spreadsheet data to confirm that multiple independent private databases hold the very same records. Baseline was launched in March and it was developed through a collaboration between Microsoft, ConsenSys, and EY. The concept used baselining to verify that the records held by different entities’ databases were verifiably the same while allowing the company information o remain in traditional databases.

Great news @LimeChain. Together with @provideplatform we developed an integration between Google Sheets and Microsoft Dynamics 365 using Baseline Protocol. @baselineproto #blockchain #baselineprotocol #Dynamics365 https://t.co/AXrwUKB8Rl

The idea was developed and executed in collaboration with the blockchain solutions companies Limechain and Provide, in order to show how the Baseline Protocol can be utilized by both large and small companies as well as the ones that don’t rely on complex information systems to manage their records. The proof demonstrated that the baselining technique doesn’t mean that the data is stored on a blockchain but it does use the distributed ledger technology to ‘’enforce the consistency of separate records.’’ Baselining uses the Ethereum mainnet as the middleware for the verification process, and according to the co-founder of LimeChain, George Spasov:

“Using this and the Google Sheets API, the team was able to connect the spreadsheet with any other ‘baselined’ system and ensure consistency on a record-by-record, row-by-row basis. Our insight was that many smaller companies still use spreadsheets to keep track of their contracts and purchase orders. With the help of Provide we figured out how to baseline a row in a spreadsheet with a record in a much more sophisticated system like Microsoft’s Dynamics 365.’’

The Consensys developer and Baseline Protocol co-founder John Wolpert described how this process is different from traditional blockchain-based record keeping:

“Instead of a single point of truth being one big database full of everybody’s information — which is a terrible idea, certainly for business […] it would be a good idea if we used [the blockchain’s] abilities in data and business process execution and a state service to maintain consistency between databases.”

Wolpert added that the sheets and 365 integrations are a part of the decentralization development from companies that participate in the Baseline Community.
