Riot Platforms has completed a major digital asset custody transfer, moving its Bitcoin holdings from NYDIG Trust Company to BitGo Bank & Trust — a clear signal that institutional Bitcoin infrastructure keeps getting stronger.
According to a November 4 SEC filing, the transfer finished on October 29, formally ending a custodial arrangement that had been in place since November 2023. Riot confirmed it paid no early termination penalties.
For Bitcoin investors, the most interesting development is not the custody vendor itself. It is what the upgrade says about how listed miners protect reserves as they scale.
The bigger question now is whether more public Bitcoin holders will follow Riot into modern, segregated institutional custody — while self-custody remains fully available for those who prefer it.
What Changed in Riot’s Digital Asset Custody Setup?
Riot originally entered its NYDIG custodial agreement on November 1, 2023. Bitcoin was stored in cold storage wallets inside a digital asset account registered in the company’s name.
That deal carried an annual fee based on the daily average US dollar value of Bitcoin held, with automatic yearly renewals and a 30-day termination notice.
The move to BitGo was executed through a separate account transfer and transition agreement involving Riot, NYDIG Trust, BitGo Bank & Trust and affiliated entities.
Under the new custodial agreement — signed on October 7 and amended on October 14 — BitGo is responsible for holding Riot’s digital assets and cash.

How Do BitGo’s Segregated Accounts Protect Bitcoin Reserves?
The BitGo arrangement requires segregated custodial accounts exclusively for Riot. Holdings stay separate from other customers’ assets and from BitGo’s own corporate balance sheet.
Temporary omnibus accounts are allowed only in limited cases, such as settling transactions with a BitGo affiliate or using the bank’s settlement services when Riot authorizes them.
Riot retains ownership of the assets throughout. BitGo receives a monthly fee based on the average value of assets under custody and must maintain commercially reasonable insurance coverage.
The contract starts with a one-year term and renews automatically unless either side gives at least 60 days’ notice before expiry.
An amendment also lets Riot exit early with 14 days’ written notice and no early termination fee — flexibility that should reassure investors watching corporate Bitcoin treasuries.
Liability is generally capped at custody fees paid or payable in the six months before a claim, with exceptions for fraud, willful misconduct and gross negligence.
Is Institutional Bitcoin Custody Maturing Alongside Self-Custody?

Why Did Riot Reposition Its Bitcoin While Expanding Data Centers?
The custody transition arrives during a year in which Riot has used Bitcoin sales to finance expanding data center operations.
In its November 4 third-quarter results, Riot said it sold 20,264 BTC over the first nine months of 2026, generating approximately $1.5 billion, primarily for data center development.
The company ended September with 2,418 BTC valued at about $202 million, alongside $748.2 million in cash, including restricted funds.
Quarterly revenue reached $181.4 million versus $180.2 million a year earlier. Bitcoin mining revenue fell to $116 million from $160.8 million, even as production rose to 1,637 BTC from 1,406 BTC.
In August, Riot signed a $9.1 billion data center agreement covering 191 megawatts at its Rockdale facility in Texas. November earnings then disclosed a 15-year lease for 910 megawatts at Corsicana, with an estimated initial contract value of $28 billion.
Contracted data center capacity now totals 1,151 megawatts — roughly $38 billion in expected revenue over the agreements’ initial terms.
We would look at that dual track as constructive for Bitcoin: a major miner is converting hash-power profits into long-duration compute infrastructure while keeping a meaningful Bitcoin reserve under professional custody.
What Should Bitcoin Investors Watch After the BitGo Transfer?
First, watch how other listed miners update custody disclosures. Segregated accounts, insurance language and clean early-exit terms are becoming the institutional standard.
Second, track Riot’s remaining Bitcoin stack against its data center buildout. Ending September near 2,418 BTC still ties the equity story to Bitcoin’s long-term value.
