Beefchain is a Wyoming-based traceability solution that aims to track the origin of cattle and sheep by using Cardano. Aside from the strong Wyoming connections, it was an ATALA trace solution that is built on top of Cardano which made the blockchain a perfect choice for BeefTrace. In today’s Cardano news, we are reading more on the solution.
The global conversation about sustainability put farming under the spotlight with many highlighting cattle farming as the biggest polluters in the world. In order to reduce the global consumption of meat is believed to be one of the easiest ways to fight off climate change and to protect the environment in the short-term. However, wiping out farms and farming will not be a viable option so many have focused on promoting sustainable practices that reduce the environmental impact farming has.
One such project is BeefChain. It represents a blockchain traceability solution that enables unique animal identification and ensures the origin of the sheep and cattle. The company is based in Wyoming and is now trialing the technology on over 1600 calves from six family-owned ranches in the country. While the idea behind BeefChain is not something new, using blockchain to track and store info about individual cattle most certainly is. according to the company, blockchain allows customers to scan a product and to track its origin back to the farm where the cattle were raised.
Enabling consumers to track the origin of the meat that they buy will help increase the market share of sustainable farmers and will give them access to fair prices. However, in order for this to work, BeefChain’s tracing solution has to be scalable and easy to use. Of course, it has to be widely available to end consumers which is why the company decided to build the platform on top of Cardano. Aside from the strong Wyoming connections where several labs are developing Cardano-based products, it was the traceability solution that is available on the blockchain which was attractive to BeefChain. The company said:
“Atala TRACE empowers product owners to improve the visibility of their supply chain, bringing transparency to the end customer — rewarding primary producers who are committed to quality.”
Combined with other tracing solutions like QR codes and RFID Chips, connecting BeefChain to a blockchain solution will make it hard for bad actors to forge the credentials of the product. With over 40 percent of the beef fraud being counterfeiting, passing lower-grade meat as a high value is a huge problem.
