Crypto liquidations topped $1 billion on Thursday as a sharp rout in AI-linked stocks spilled into digital assets, yet Bitcoin is holding up better than much of Wall Street’s tech complex.
Bitcoin slipped back toward $76,000, down roughly 5% over 24 hours after touching nearly $81,000 during Wednesday’s post-election rally.
The Nasdaq sank close to 6%, while a chip-sector index fell more than 10% in early trading.
For Bitcoin investors, the most interesting development is that the leverage flush is clearing excess from the market while long-term adoption keeps building.
The bigger question now is whether this reset sets the stage for Bitcoin’s next leg higher.
What Triggered the Crypto Liquidations?
The move began in equities, not in crypto.
Investors started pricing in the fallout from Tuesday’s U.S. midterm elections, which handed Democrats control of both chambers of Congress.
The concern is that stronger political opposition could slow the construction of the data centers that power the AI boom.
“We’re seeing some fresh selling come back to the market as the implications on slower datacenter build out enter into focus,” said Joshua Lim, global co-head of markets at institutional crypto brokerage FalconX.
He added that “Yesterday’s post-election relief rally was driven by a lot of short-covering into a well-telegraphed result.”
Carlos Guzman, vice president of research at trading firm GSR, said the midterms “appear to have triggered this sell-off,” adding to existing doubts about returns on AI spending.
In other words, this was a risk-off wave in tech, and Bitcoin simply got swept up in the current.
Bitcoin Shows Relative Resilience as Leverage Gets Flushed
More than $1 billion in crypto derivatives positions were liquidated over 24 hours, according to CoinGlass data, with most of the losses coming from leveraged long bets.
That was the largest wipeout since October 28-29, when Bitcoin dropped from nearly $82,000 to $76,000.
That comparison deserves attention.
Bitcoin has now returned to the same $76,000 area that acted as a floor last week, rather than breaking down to fresh lows.
Exchange data shows the 24-hour range ran from about $80,960 down to roughly $75,570, and buyers stepped in quickly near the bottom of that band.
Ether traded near $2,250, while Solana, XRP and Hyperliquid posted slightly steeper 6%-7% declines.

Leverage flushes also tend to reset funding and open interest, removing the forced sellers that can drag on a recovery.

Crypto-linked equities took a heavier hit than the coins themselves.
- Bitcoin miners, many of which have expanded into AI computing, fell 15%-20%.
- Coinbase, Circle and BitGo dropped between 10% and 15%.
- Strategy, the largest corporate Bitcoin holder, lost 9.6%.
The lesson here is simple.
Many miners are now partly AI infrastructure plays, so their shares trade with the data-center story as much as with Bitcoin.
Bitcoin itself has no earnings guidance, no capex cycle and no political permit risk; its supply schedule stays fixed at 21 million coins no matter who controls Congress.

Wintermute’s Jasper De Maere urged traders not to overread a single day of selling.
He noted that crypto has held up relatively well amid the turmoil in AI stocks, while broader adoption continues to strengthen the longer-term outlook.
“Let’s see where we land in the short term here, medium term still glass half full,” De Maere said, adding that investors should “keep an eye out for bargains surfacing over time.”
Cycle analyst Bob Loukas also struck a constructive tone on Bitcoin’s bigger picture on X: “Lot of questions on Bitcoin’s 4yr Cycle. I’m of the view the cycle low is well in.”
Loukas sees any near-term weakness as part of a normal weekly cycle process and back-filling, rather than a break in the larger structure.

What Should Bitcoin Investors Watch Next?
Because cross-asset correlations are running high, Bitcoin’s next move will likely take cues from the wider market.
- Nasdaq and chip stocks: a stabilisation in AI names would ease pressure on risk assets.
- Derivatives data: falling open interest and neutral funding would confirm the leverage reset is complete.
- Spot Bitcoin ETF flows: steady inflows would show institutions are buying the dip.
- Treasury yields and the dollar: easing yields and a softer DXY usually support Bitcoin.

Can Bitcoin Reclaim $80,000 After the Shakeout?
The level to watch is clear.
From around $76,000, a return to $80,000 requires a gain of roughly 5.3%, which would erase this week’s liquidation-driven drop.
A push back to last week’s high near $82,000 would need an advance of about 7.9%.
Holding the $76,000 zone for a second time in a week would strengthen the case that buyers are defending this area.
We believe the fundamentals have not changed at all: Bitcoin’s fixed supply, deepening institutional infrastructure and steady global adoption remain intact.
Days like today shake out over-leveraged traders, but they also hand patient investors better entry prices.
The coming days will reveal how quickly the market absorbs this selling, and if Bitcoin reclaims $80,000, investors may begin looking beyond the AI turmoil toward the next leg of the bull cycle.
