Keel Infrastructure has sold its entire bitcoin treasury, converting 2,520 BTC into roughly $192 million during the third quarter as the former Bitfarms accelerates its shift into AI and high-performance computing.
The company disclosed that the sales covered its full treasury stack of 2,261 BTC plus another 259 BTC produced by remaining mining operations, timed into periods of market strength.
For Bitcoin investors watching miner balance sheets, the move is less a bearish signal and more a reminder of how liquid BTC remains when large holders reallocate.
The bigger question now is whether miner treasury sales into strength keep handing coins to longer-term holders while firms chase AI power deals.
What Did Keel Infrastructure Actually Sell?
Keel Infrastructure, formerly known as Bitfarms, reported that it exited its bitcoin treasury during the quarter ended September 30.
Management said the sales were timed to take advantage of periods of market strength, leaving only nominal bitcoin holdings by the end of September.
Going forward, Keel plans to sell bitcoin generated by its remaining mining operations in Quebec on a daily basis, which effectively removes treasury price exposure from the balance sheet.
We believe the timing detail matters more than the headline: selling into strength is very different from forced liquidation into a panic bid.
Why Is the Mining-to-AI Pivot Accelerating?
Keel previously shut down its U.S. bitcoin mining operations in the second quarter and redirected those sites toward AI infrastructure.
As of November 4, the company reported about $780 million in unrestricted cash liquidity, giving it a sizable war chest for construction.
Construction started in September at Moses Lake, Washington, which Keel expects to become its first operational HPC facility with revenue targeted for 2027.
Permitting also advanced at Sharon and Panther Creek in Pennsylvania, while the firm studies expansions that could lift secured data-center power capacity from 478 megawatts toward as much as 1,928 megawatts.
CEO Ben Gagnon framed the opportunity around scarce electricity: power supply is getting scarcer while demand keeps climbing, which he says strengthens Keel’s hand in lease talks.
As we covered when looking at Riot Platforms and large AI infrastructure deals, bitcoin miners that control power and land sit in a useful seat as AI demand expands.
How Did Earnings Look After the Bitcoin Exit?
Third-quarter revenue fell to $28 million from $68 million a year earlier, mainly reflecting the U.S. mining shutdown and lower average bitcoin prices.
Keel reported a $62 million loss from continuing operations, compared with an $11 million loss a year earlier, while adjusted EBITDA was negative $27 million versus positive $19 million in the year-ago quarter.
General and administrative expenses doubled to $34 million as the company expanded its management team and funded large-scale infrastructure work.
For us, the key takeaway is that Keel is using bitcoin liquidity and cash reserves to fund a multi-year build-out rather than treating BTC as a permanent treasury asset.
Are Bitcoin Mining Stocks Still Oversold?
Keel’s shares dropped about 21% on Thursday amid a broader tech sell-off that hit other miners and AI infrastructure names.
Shares of KEEL were recently trading near $1.65, down more than 52% over the prior month.
Investment manager Vaneck has argued that AI-focused bitcoin miners and powered data-center suppliers were disproportionately punished in October, with an average decline near 35%.
Importantly, Vaneck noted that no signed leases had been canceled among the publicly traded companies it analyzed, and it pointed to long-term electricity shortages as a structural tailwind.
Citing Morgan Stanley estimates, Vaneck highlighted a potential 38-gigawatt U.S. data-center capacity shortfall through 2028, even while flagging financing risks around construction debt.
That view lines up with our earlier read that bitcoin mining stocks looked oversold after the October washout.
What Does Miner Selling Mean for Bitcoin Holders?
Large miner treasury sales often sound scary in a risk-off tape, especially after bitcoin slipped below the high-$70,000s in the latest equity-linked selloff.
Yet Keel’s disclosure emphasizes sales into strength, and the company still leaves the market with substantial cash rather than distressed forced selling.
Bitcoin’s liquidity absorbed a $192 million treasury exit while the network kept producing blocks without interruption.
Cycle analyst Bob Loukas recently put the current drawdown in a constructive long-term frame, arguing the four-year cycle low is already in even if the weekly cycle is still working lower.
In that reading, any drop over the next few months can be part of a back-filling process rather than a new structural break.
We believe miner rotations into AI do not weaken Bitcoin’s fixed-supply thesis; they often transfer coins from operators raising project capital into holders who want long-duration exposure.
As we noted when bitcoin briefly traded below $77,000, volatility around equity risk appetite can create entry windows for patient buyers.
Can Bitcoin Keep Absorbing Miner Treasury Sales?
The watch list from here is straightforward: ETF spot flows, Nasdaq risk appetite, Treasury yields, the U.S. dollar, and whether other miners keep selling production daily or rebuild treasuries.
Keel’s cash pile and AI build-out show how mining-era power assets can be recycled into the next wave of compute demand.
Bitcoin, meanwhile, keeps doing what it does best: providing a deep, 24/7 market that lets companies raise liquidity without waiting on a traditional financing window.
We believe that combination of miner capitalization and Bitcoin’s hard-capped supply remains a long-term bullish setup for holders who can look past short-term equity noise.
The coming quarters will reveal whether Keel’s AI leases land on schedule.
And if Bitcoin continues to absorb treasury rotations the way it absorbed this $192 million sale, investors may start treating miner exits as another form of healthy redistribution rather than a reason to step away.
