The founder of Reddit, the largest online discussion board in the world, Alexis Ohanian was recently a guest at the Late Show with Stephen Colbert. During the show, Ohanian was asked about Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies and his answers were pretty confident.
According to him, both Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies as a whole can ‘fuel a potential new Internet’ – even if it’s one with a high level of volatility. Ohanian also touted the idea of a digital currency that could act as a “store of value and not be backed by a single country”.
Even though this idea may sound silly to some, it could secure and transfer assets across national borders which is what the main idea of cryptocurrency is – especially for countries which are economically weak.
According to Ohanian:
“In so many states, there are uncertainties about government and money. And people see their lives savings disappear. There’s a real value of having a currency that – as volatile as bitcoin is – are still potentially less volatile than some of the states that see hyper inflation.”
He added:
“For so many people in the world to have that security of knowing what’s yours is yours – because it [cryptocurrency] is now digital, it can be transferred with you wherever you are going – is actually pretty empowering.”
Later in the show, Ohanian said that he ceased managing the day to day operations of Reddit in January 2018 – and is now running a venture capital fund together with his former Y Combinator partner Garry Tan.
