IMF warned Russia can use BTC mining in order to avoid sanctions because the country has significant energy resources to put towards mining as per the report that we have today in our latest cryptocurrency news.
The International Monetary Fund – IMF Warned Russia can use BTC mining to evade sanctions that were levied in the wake of the invasion of Ukraine. The report warned that the country could use its energy resources to power crypto mining and generate revenue. The IMF said:
“Over time, sanctioned countries could also allocate more resources toward evading sanctions through mining. Mining for energy-intensive blockchains like Bitcoin can allow countries to monetize energy resources, some of which cannot be exported due to sanctions.”
The organization also noted that the share of mining in countries under sanctions and the size of mining revenue globally, suggests that the magnitude of these flows is contained but there are risks to financial integrity. President Vladimir Putin said that Russia has a competitive advantage when it comes to BTC mining but according to Cambridge University, Russia is still one of the leading jurisdictions in the world in terms of BTC mining, ranking third in a study published in 2021.
After the Ukraine invasion, concerns were raised over the potential for Russia to evade sanctions via crypto. It is important to note that while it is still unlikely that cryptos can enable Russia as a nation to evade the international sanctions but there’s a sorry that the sanctioned entities can pivot to crypto and provide revenue. Other than mining, other methods have been used in the past, and such an example is ransomware. The former FBI Agent crane Hassold and the director of threat intelligence at Abnormal Security noted cryptocurrencies are the main factor driving today’s ransomware industry.
Another method is the use of crypto exchanges that didn’t comply with sanctions. SUEX exchange was sanctioned by the US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control which is an entity complicit in cyber-related activity against American interests.
As recently reported, The developer platform Github suspended Russian devs accounts associated with organizations sanctioned by the US government. The sanctioned accounts include some of the biggest banks in Russia like Alfa-Bank, Sberbank, and other individual developers with links to the sanctioned firms but most individual accounts without links or ties to the companies were blocked in the process. Researcher Sergey Bobrov who has no links to such firms reported that his account also got suspended and then restored.
