Dallas Mavericks accepts payments made in DOGE after initially allowing BTC payments but no one has ever made such payment. Now, let’s see whether with his new option something will change, as we can see more in our DOGE news.
Crypto payments company BitPay added support for Dogecoin and Mark Cuban’s Dallas Mavericks accepts payments made in DOGE as well, becoming the first merchant to do so. The NBA basketball team is all in crypto and made media rounds for the past few weeks to talk up ETH, NFT collecting and plenty of other possibilities for smart contracts to disrupt software, NBA ticketing, and insurance claims. The franchise which is the second NBA team to start accepting BTC as payment, partnered with BitPay to accept DOGE as payments for tickets and merch.
Dogecoin is meme-based crypto that soared recently in value thanks to social media mentions especially those made by Elon Musk. BitPay added Dogecoin to its list of supported coins today and the basketball team Is now the first merchant to sign on and accept the payments, but why did this happen:
“Because we can.We have chosen to do so because sometimes in business you have to do things that are fun, engaging, and hopefully generate a lot of PR. So we will take Dogecoin, today, tomorrow and possibly forevermore. For those of you who would like to learn more about Dogecoin we strongly encourage you to talk to your teenagers who are on TikTok and ask them about it.”
In an interview earlier this week, Cuban admitted:
“We actually took our first Bitcoin five or six years ago, only nobody bought anything [in Bitcoin], and the only reason I did it was to prove a point that no one’s going to buy anything. And then we did it again a couple years ago, and we sold $314 worth at whatever Bitcoin was at the time. Again, somebody was just trying to prove a point that they would buy something, and I was trying to prove a point that not many people would.”
With many cryptos surging in value, no one wants to spend them anyway. This can be seen as a fascinating contradiction as companies like Tesla and PayPal plan to let customers pay in crypto. Cuban added:
“As long as you’re converting to fiat, you’re not really spending in crypto anyway.”
