Year 2414 seems so far away, but the Netflix TV series “Altered Carbon” has visualized it pretty well, with several cryptocurrencies such as Zcash, Monero and Bitcoin being used by the public. The recently released and highly anticipated second season of Altered Carbon (a cyberpunk Netflix series) is set about 400 years in the future where crypto is more than mainstream.
As a cyberpunk television series that features off-world mining colonies, extinct space aliens, rogue artificial intelligence, digital immortality, mind uploading and corrupt corporate overloads, “Altered Carbon” is a popular show which predicts that Zcash, Monero and bitcoin will be one of the cryptocurrencies with mass use in the 25th century.
The second season of the series was released on Thursday, 27 February 2020, and stars Anthony Mackie, best known for playing Falcon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The plot takes place approximately 30 season after the plot in the first season, which was mainly set in the year 2384.
One scene of the show is in the focus of the Zcash news, depicting a shop where prices are set in crypto and without any fiat in sight. Basically, it is easy to see that the world of Altered Carbon suffers from extreme economic volatility and inequality and focuses on the effects that this has on society. As such, the need for money is a central driver of events in the show.
You can see a screenshot of the scene below.
However, the characters do not mention Zcash, Monero or Bitcoin at any point in the show. Instead, they refer to money as ‘credits’ and by no other name. A scene in the fifth episode of the second season, still, reveals that in some markets, cryptocurrencies are the real medium of exchange in this dark future.
We won’t give any more spoilers on the episode, season or the show. However, we will also point to the fact that it is interesting to see Zcash, Monero and Bitcoin used in the cryptonews coming from a very popular Netflix TV series!
