Football Giant Benfica, the European football team announced they will be accepting bitcoin and ethereum payments. The fans of the club can now pay for a match ticket with cryptocurrency and we are reading more about this amazing idea in our altcoin news below.
This is not the first time a football giant enters the world of cryptocurrency but it is the first time that a club starts accepting crypto as payments. In the recent past, the titan Juventus, the Italian club looked into the idea of launching its own club token. The supporters of the club were able to pay for matches online using bitcoin during the 2018 World Cup in Russia which, unfortunately, didn’t go as planned.
The transactional value of cryptocurrency can now be seen in full around the Estadio da Luz which is the Benfica’s home ground. This sudden decision comes as a courtesy of UTRUST which is a crypto payments processing company that utilizes its own ETH-based token-UTK. According to a press release from earlier today, we can read that:
“UTRUST’s core technology will allow Benfica to take advantage of the increased security and convenience of cryptocurrency payments while protecting the club from market volatility. It will also significantly reduce processing fees and eliminate inconvenient credit-card chargebacks and fraudulent payments.”
The CEO of the Football giant Benfica Domingos Soares de Oliveira stated that the decision to start accepting crypto payments comes due to the recognition of the club to always ‘’stay ahead of the curve’’ adding:
“[We] recognize that many of our supporters are now digital users first so we want to be ahead of the curve when it comes to accepting novel technologies.”
As reported in the latest cryptocurrency news previously, the former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp once supported cryptocurrencies via his Twitter account. Also, another football legend Ronaldinho even launched his own token. There are plenty of popular names from the football world and fans are also starting to accept this idea. As from April, the controversial cryptocurrency Bitcoin SV signed a sponsorship deal with the Scottish club Ayr United as well.
Benefica has a long history in European Football and has more than 14 million followers worldwide and 7 million active fans from the internet and social media accounts.
